On Thursday August 7th, 2025, residents and landlords of Ajegunle and Ajeromi communities in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area and Ifelodun LCDA woke up to the attacks of thugs and carpenters breaking into their buildings, removing the roofing sheets of their properties on the order of one Fatai Oyegbemi Aromire, the head of the Ojora family.
The Ojora family have been involved in several instances of property demolition in Ajegunle, Iganmu and Badia, often linked to disputes over land ownership and usage rights. These incidents have involved harassment, forceful evictions, demolitions, and the use of hoodlums to enforce these claims. The family has a long history of demanding payment of tenement charges from landlords, using thugs and street urchins to enforce the payment of these charges.
In the recent attack on the above communities on August 7, 2025, an 81 year old widow alleged that she paid the Ojora family the sum of two million Naira and the family has refused to issue her a receipt under the excuse that the receipt is not ready. She says she made several efforts to get the receipt from the family to no avail, only to see them pulling off the roof of her building. Many landlords and buildings also suffered the fate of the old widow.
To further compound the woes of landlords, tenants residing in the properties are also left to the vagaries of the inclement rainy season of sleeping under buildings without roofs. The Ojora family has been accused of sponsoring thugs to forcefully eject landlords from their properties.
The use of thugs and miscreants for these demolitions and evictions have caused widespread fear and panic among landlords and residents who are concerned about losing their homes.
The destruction of buildings and displacement of residents is capable of leading to significant unrest, social disruption and community instability that can lead to social unrest. Residents have shown resistance to the demolitions, organizing protests and seeking legal justice and intervention of the Lagos state government.
The Ojora family had in the past years of 2001, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2023, 2024 and recently in August 2025 executed the demolition and eviction of landlords in Iganmu, Badia, Ajegunle and Ajeromi communities.
The objective of this piece is a humanitarian appeal for the government to step into this matter and stop what the Ojora family are doing because about 500,000 people will be displaced from their homes. This is not the way that things should be done. People are left outside, no alternative housing, no proper notice whatsoever. If you visit the communities, you will find many residents, children and families sleeping outside without a roof over their heads, especially as we are in the peak of the rainy season.
In an interview with News Central television on August 8, 2025, the head of the Ojora family confirmed that landlords of the affected properties in Ajegunle and Ajeromi communities are owing them tenement land charges – this is the cause of the demolitions and evictions.
The governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, must immediately intervene in this matter to find a lasting solution and amicably settle this matter once and for all and restore peace in Ajegunle and Ajeromi communities. A stitch in time saves nine.
