Resignation Of The Director General Of National Intelligence Agency

The reasons given by the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ahmed Abubakar, for his resignation are deliberate standard excuses to divert attention for his abysmally poor, woeful performance in handling insecurity. Ahmed Abubakar should be grateful that he was not fired by President Tinubu.

I call on the chiefs of other security agencies to emulate the courage of the Director General of the NIA to immediately resign their appointments albeit the sit-tight culture of Nigerian public officers.

Under the watch of leaders of Nigeria’s security apparatus, insecurity has blossomed into a booming commercial enterprise. They should retire.

According to statistics released by Punch Newspaper, about 4,416 persons were killed and 4,334 abducted in Tinubu’s first year.

Recently, on August 15, 2024, 20 medical students were kidnapped by gunmen in Benue State. The 20 medical students from the University of Maiduguri were released on Friday, August 23, 2024.

Also, eight members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) travelling to their camp in Sokoto were abducted by kidnappers in August 2023. They were released penultimate Monday after spending one year with their abductors.

The level of insecurity in the country had earned Nigeria a place as one of the most insecure countries in the world, ranking her 144th out of 163 countries on the Global Peace Index in 2024.

The frequency of these atrocities has kept Nigerians in a state of perpetual fear and uncertainty and is impacting social cohesion, the economy, public health, and education across the country.

There’s nothing more frustrating than to give assignment to people but for them to fail and embarrass you. President Tinubu should stop playing ‘paddy-paddy’ with the lives of Nigerians with security chiefs. Enough is enough.
