There is an ongoing gas leakage along Bayelsa Palm-New Otuoke road, near Yenogoa, in Bayelsa State.
There are a two major pipelines running at parallel level in the environment where this leakage occur. The gas pipelines belong to Shell and ENL in the swamp.
The affected, leaking gas pipeline, belongs to ENL.
An environmental activist, Maurice Alagoa, was sighted within the vicinity of the leaking gas pipeline. Mr. Alagba said, “There are evidences that the pipeline’s integrity was manually compromised by unknown persons.”
He decried the usefulness of the recently awarded pipelines surveillance contract by the Federal Government to a former militant leader of the Niger Delta, and said this should not happen after pipelines surveillance contract was awarded to protect oil facilities.
The National Oil Spill Detection Agency has been notified of the development. Also officials of the Bayelsa Environmental Protection Agency has visited the location of the leaking gas pipeline but issued no statement of action to remediate the environmental impact of the leakage to communities in the area.
